Staircase plays a very vital role in the planning of a house as per Vaastu. If we get this wrong, it can lead to several bad effects. The planning part of the staircase is of utmost importance, but the concept of the number of steps in the staircase has also to be correct to avoid any negative influences. In this page I am going to tell you about the basic maths to be followed to identify the correct no of staircase steps in your house along with vaastu tip to get it corrected, if required.
Maths of Staircase
First we need to identify the number of correct steps for staircase in your house. Correct means the number of steps that can help you to climb the ladder of success. The formula on how to fix the total number of steps in a staircase is as follows:-
“Total Number of Steps are divided by 3 and the remainder should be 2”.
Example:
- 17 steps / 3 = 5 remainder =2 i.e. number of steps in the staircase is ok
- 23 steps /3= 7 remainder =2 number is ok
- 14 steps /3 = 4 remainder =2 number is ok
How to check whether the staircase is right?
The best method to check the correctness of staircase is by “Chanting”. While climbing up a staircase, chant ‘Indra’, ‘Yam’, ‘Raaj’ on each step.
Your last step should be on ‘Yam’. This number of steps in the staircase is auspicious.
Rule of Staircase for regular Residential Building
For a regular residential building, 10 feet is the standard height of rooms, so for a staircase having 17 steps, you will end up with a riser step height of little over 7.5 inches for each step. This is on a higher side but still many people ask for this only, even if I ask them to rethink their decision, as it is a bit on the higher side.
On the other hand, for the same height a staircase which is having 20 number of steps will give a very comfortable riser step height of around 6.5 inches. But this staircase consumes more space in the plan area. So, it’s a hard trade off, what to choose, comfort while climbing or space in the plan? Some people avoid keeping 20 steps in a staircase, in that case you got to take 23 steps, which will consume even more plan area.
Chanting rule output for regular building: If you cross check the number of steps 17/20/23 according to the ‘Indra’, ’Yam’, ’Raaj’ rule then all three examples give same result and all are correct. So, we can say if the number of steps in your home staircase is any one of 17, 20 or 23, then it is best and auspicious.
Rule for steps up to the plinth
This chanting rule is also applicable to steps for getting to the plinth or any other height. The number of steps would be either 2 or 5 or 8 and so on. So go ahead, follow this simple ancient rule to make staircase and relax that one aspect is correctly taken care of.
What if the staircase is not correct as per Vaastu?
At last, the question arises — “What if I already have a house and the staircase does not conform to this?” This can give a headache, because it’s not easy to remodel a staircase. Well, there is a simple, cheap remedy.
